Healthy skin and healthy skin care can be achieved by following some simple steps every day. The first and most important factor is to protect yourself from the sun. We are pretty much all aware of the documented cancer risks associated with over exposure to ultraviolet light in the suns rays, but even if we eliminate such drastic risks the damage caused by the sun on our skin is still worth considering. It can be argued that the majority of visible changes to our skin's texture and elasticity are actually a function of a lifetime of being exposed to the sun. So whilst most of us pay for expensive holidays to warmer climes in order to gain a tan, we then come home and complain that we are looking older, and the instances of botox use and other surgical interventions continues to rise.Healthy skin care can only be achieved if you avoid the sun during it's peak hours, or reduce the amount of time you spend outside during this period. There is an increasing amount of sun-protective clothing available nowadays too; clothing actually manufactured with SPF (sun protection factor). However if this is not something you are interested in, you can still take measures to protect yourself by wearing long sleeve shirts or long trousers, thereby reducing the amount of skin being exposed. It should also be obvious but worth stating that you need to include sunscreen as part of your healthy skin care routine.
Another factor in skin care is whether or not you smoke. Not many people maybe aware of this but smoking not only affects other areas of your health, but it also accelerates the aging process of your skin. The narrowed blood vessels caused by smoking decreases blood flow to the skin, thereby reducing the amount of oxygen and vitamins delivered and ultimately reducing the elasticity of the skin and producing wrinkles.
Washing habits also play a part in healthy skin care routines. It may surprise some people to learn that having your bath too hot, or by staying in the shower for too long reduces the skin's natural oils, and so both should be avoided. Soaps with strong perfumes also have the same oil stripping properties leaving your skin dry. It is also important that you don't rub the skin too hard with your towel, better to pat dry and leave the moisture on the skin.
You should also ensure that you choose the right moisturiser for your skin, and follow a good moisturising routine.
